What Employers Need to Know
The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) has announced that it will distribute $2 billion in surplus rebates to eligible Schedule 1 employers beginning in October 2025. This follows a similar rebate issued earlier this year and is intended to provide financial relief to Ontario businesses facing continued economic uncertainty.
The rebate will be applied as a credit to an employer’s WSIB account and used against future premiums. Employers who are fully up to date on premium payments and reporting obligations may request a cheque for any credit balance. For most employers, the rebate is expected to equal approximately 61% of the premiums reported in 2024—a significant financial benefit.
To qualify for the Fall 2025 rebate, employers must:
- Have an active WSIB account with premium obligations as of May 1, 2025
- Have had premium obligations in 2024
- Not have been convicted of offences under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act or Occupational Health and Safety Act in 2024 or 2025 (and not more than one such conviction between 2020–2025)
- Not have had a traumatic workplace fatality attributed to the employer in 2024 or 2025 (and not more than one such fatality between 2020–2025)
- Not be affiliated, through common ownership, with an employer who is ineligible due to the above criteria
