The Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) is a group of worker and management representatives who work together to improve health and safety in the workplace. Their purpose is to:
Identify potential workplace hazards
Make recommendations to improve safety
Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
Promote a safe and healthy work environment for everyone
Who Needs a JHSC?
Under Ontario’s OHSA, workplaces with 20 or more employees are required to have a JHSC. At least one worker and one management representative must be JHSC certified through specialized training.
What If You’re Not Compliant?
Non-compliance with OHSA can have serious consequences, including:
Fines of up to $1.5 million per conviction for corporations
Fines of up to $100,000 and/or up to 12 months in jail for individuals (owners, managers, supervisors)
Stop-work orders from Ministry of Labour inspectors, causing costly downtime
Increased liability if an injury or incident occurs in the workplace
👉 In short: compliance isn’t optional—it protects your people and your business.
